A passion for Delacroix
The Karen B. Cohen Collection

It must be said that the ensemble of Delacroix's drawings and oil sketches amassed by Karen B Cohen in fewer than 30 years is more than exceptional. She indulge in exclusive purchases in public sales, but our great art lover concurrently acquired more modestly-priced works, preparatory works, sketch-books, manuscripts, or copies of masters. The Karen B. Cohen collection of drawings and painted sketches compels our admiration: not only for its quality and variety, but also for the enduringly passionate commitment required to track down so many works from New York.

At the present time, a selection of 90 works from this collection have exceptionally returned to the walls on which most of them figured until the sale of Delacroix's studio in 1864. They thus offer a digest of the artist's career, enriched with comparative works borrowed from the Louvre, from the Musée de la Vie romantique and from the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Dijon, as well as from the private collection of Louis Antoine and Veronique Prat.

Even though the Eugene Delacroix Museum was created on the initiative of artists and collectors, this is the first time it has exhibited a private collection.

Edvard Munch
....the "Anti-Scream"

A new approach to Munch’s work, one of the most mythical artists of the end of the XIXth-century. Edvard Munch has not been shown in France for 20 years. So the Pinacotheque de Paris is offering the public a unique opportunity to completely rediscover this immense artist’s oeuvre, through a simple approach, allowing everyone to grasp the major place this artist has held in art history.
The « Anti-Scream » will regroup about 100 works chosen in private collections. The idea is to show Edvard Munch’s work after the beginning of the century, when he had created an incomparable expressive style and when he started to include photos and in his body of work.
Edvard Munch is known exclusively through a single work: "The Scream". It is emblematic but not representative of his work. The overheated notoriety of this painting resulted in the overshadowing of the work as a whole, as well as of the artist’s true intent.
To undertake this important retrospective the Pinacotheque invited Dieter Buchhart, the acknowledged authority on Munch’s work, to be its curator, surrounded by a prestigious committee of experts.
