LATIN QUARTER - SAINT GERMAIN DES PRES - Paris

The Latin Quarter has been the bastion of the Paris University and various academies since the XIIIth century. In 1215, the oldest university in Europe drew up its first statuts on the slopes of the Montagne Sainte Genevieve. The Sorbonne was founded in 1257, followed by the College de France in 1530. Then the Ecole Polytechnique, the Ecole Normale Superieure and the prestigious Louis le Grand and Henri IV lycées were founded in the next century.
Saint-Germain-des-Prés consider itself to be the epitome of Parisian culture. It is true that this quarter has always attracted artists and writers. As early as the XVIIth century, the literary world began to meet in the many different cafes in st Germain des Pres, such as Le Procope, which opened in 1689 and frequented by Diderot, Voltaire and Robespierre. The Café de Flore and the Café des Deux Magots organise their own literacy prizes each year.
In Rue Bonaparte, there are art galleries, antique dealers decoration and fashion shops, all with various forms and colours which prove that history and creation can go perfectly together.
